Personality:

Noctis's development through the game tells a story of a young boy who was once quite vibrant and outgoing who changes after tragedy touches him at a young age. The loss of his mother and the neglect of his father (although not intentionally as his father is King and must attend to his royal duties) brings Noctis to present withdrawn most of the time. As a prince of the realm he is accustomed to fulfilling expectations of the name: Lucis Caelum; from his posture, his poise, the elegant lifestyle of his wealth and his various studies Noctis is refined to behave accordingly to such expectations. He has gained a desire to please others around him which derived both from his expected demeanors and the tragedy of being a lonely boy. He has also gained an unlikeable coping mechanism to protect himself by running away and withdrawing when his responsibilities demand more from him. His spoiled nature tends to show when he is feeling insecure and reluctant to fulfill obligations put forth before him, just as much as it shows with his taste for foods, fashion, and his beloved car: which he describes to be his one and true place of security.

Noctis has struggled with feeling confident, especially when he's lived a full life of directive authority telling him what to do, where to go and the likes. So, when Noctis is alone and in charge of his party (the three dear friends who join him toward his ascension) he often struggles to make decisions and often relies on the council of his friends or others he comes across.

Noctis makes a sort of "right of passage" through a cumulative experience within the Crystal of his world (Eos), in which he spends a decade accumulating strength, power, and guidance from the Crystal to prepare him for the ultimate sacrifice to save Eos from a plague of darkness long cultivating on his world.

After his journey within the Crystal he presents with a confident stride toward his responsibilities as the True King of Lucis. Though forlorn, he is now able to recognize his feelings and articulate them accordingly whereas before he struggled with being guarded. For the first time he is able to express his love and gratitude toward his friends that have seen him through the peril journey.

His father, Regis, was a strong influence on him and there were many important moments in his life where he felt inadequate to fulfill his father's shoes. Noctis recognizes he took some time to prepare for what would be his ultimate sacrifice and in the end he wished his father would be proud of him regardless the journey he took to achieve his ascension.

Although his friends are not of royal blood he treats them as if they were his brothers and does not demonstrate any prejudice toward them. In fact, he has quite a few rows with them in their journey where arguing ensues and sometimes they challenge him--particularly Gladio and he sometimes becomes distraught but eventually they come together again stronger for the row and with lessons learned.

When it comes to love interests, i.e. Gladio's sister Iris and Luna, he is tight lipped about his intentions and/or relationships. He receives a great amount of teasing from his friends about Luna and their arranged marriage, however, truth is he has been a long time friend of Lunafreya and of her family. The two have exchanged a journal between them in their years of knowing one another, which empowers their connection to each other. Where as Iris's obvious crush toward him he humors with a kind outing out with her, although without intention to misguide his intentions for her as he plainly states she is like a sister to her--as she is to Ignis and Prompto. In fact, an important moment transpired between Iris and Noctis when they were young, he took the blame for behaving naughty and running away from the palace with Iris and insisted the young girl had naught a bit of wrongdoing in their shared adventure. This moment fostered not only a strong connection between himself and Iris but also Gladio as well.
